Jidai Festival

Jidai Festival

The Jidai Festival is a special festival held every October 22nd in the ancient city of Kyoto, celebrating the city’s illustrious history. The beginnings of the event go back to 1895, when the national capital was officially moved from Kyoto to Tokyo, and Heian Shrine was established in memory of Kyoto’s history and traditions. The festival commemorates the status of Kyoto as the seat of imperial power and center of traditional culture for over a thousand years, and revolves around a grand procession of around 2,000 costumed historical figures and their retinues. These historical figures include both men and women, and represent both the mighty and the lowly. For lovers of Japanese history, big names that make an appearance include late Edo period samurai Sakamoto Ryoma and Takamori Saigo, Sengoku era unifiers Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga, Heian-era noblewomen turned authors Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon, and legendary Genpei War heroine Tomoe Gozen. People with a fascination for period costumes will love this parade, as they can see brightly lacquered samurai armor, colorful attire worn by court nobles and their attendants, and representative outfits worn by residents of nearby fishing and farming villages. This moving history proceeds further and further into the past, from the Meiji Restoration in 1868 all the way back to the Enryaku era in the late 700s, showing attendees how much Kyoto has changed. The procession begins at the gates of the old Imperial Palace and winds through the city until it reaches the entrance to Heian Shrine, which hosts the festival in honor of Emperor Kanmu, who moved the capital from Nara to Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to reign there.
