Karatsu Kunchi Festival

Karatsu Kunchi Festival

The Karatsu Kunchi Festival is a three-day autumn festival that features a parade of large floats, called hikiyama, which are pulled through the historic castle town of Karatsu, in Saga Prefecture, Japan. It is one of Kyushu Island's biggest festivals, and an important cultural event that allows visitors to connect to the local culture of Kyushu in a real and meaningful way. The festival, which is centered around Karatsu Shrine, has been held in autumn since the Edo period, and is believed to originally have been celebrated in thanks for a bountiful harvest. There are fourteen floats in all, which were built in representation of local districts. There are elements of Japanese folklore, like Urashima Taro (mounted on an enormous sea turtle) and the Boat of Seven Treasures; enlarged helmets of famous samurai Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, and Minamoto Yoshitsune, and fantastical representations of a sea bream, a dragon, a phoenix, red and green lions, and others. A fifteenth float, a black lion, disappeared during the Meiji Period and was never replaced. Each float is pulled by residents of the fourteen traditional neighborhoods of Karatsu City, as a crowd of people around it shout, "En-ya! En-ya! En-ya!" The opening night of the festival is a beautiful sight to behold, when the floats are hung with picturesque lanterns. But the main event of the festival happens the following day, when the floats are brought down to the beach and pulled through the sand before being brought back to the shrine. On the final day of the festival, the floats are pulled through the streets of Karatsu once more in an exciting parade as the festival draws to a close. First- time visitors to the festival can easily get caught up in the excitement, but shouldn't forget to try the local festival foods, including dishes made with saw-edged perch - a local specialty.
