Sendai Aoba Festival

Sendai Aoba Festival

The Sendai Aoba Festival is one of the principal festivals of the city of Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. The festival commemorates the founding of the city by the samurai hero Date Masamune, who built a castle there in 1601. The festival is a two-day event that begins with the Evening Festival, or “Yoi Matsuri”, where floats (Yamaboko) decked with lanterns parade through the streets. Since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, some floats are paraded in memory of the disaster. The next day is a grand parade of even more floats, attended by a procession of warriors in traditional armor, representing the army of Date Masamune. The procession takes place along an avenue thickly bordered with trees, representing the nickname of Sendai City as “The City of Trees.” However, the biggest event of the festival is the Suzume Odori, or “Sparrow Dance”, involving coordinated groups in colorful yukata dancing in synchronized movements, waving colorful fans. There are dance groups of all ages – even small children participate as festival dancers. The sparrow dance showcases the diversity of Sendai City, as some of the dance groups include foreign residents – especially those who attend Tohoku University. There are groups of Suzume Odori Dancers on both days of the festival, offering festival goers ample opportunity to view this iconic dance of Sendai.
