Our Japan In-Depth with Okinawa - Kyoto Aoi Festival Tour, which includes both popular must-see and less-traveled destinations, including Okinawa Island, planned around the Kyoto Aoi Festival.

This in-depth tour of Japan and Okinawa offers a comprehensive tour experience combining popular must- see sites with less-traveled destinations and memorable cultural experiences, all during the beautiful spring season. The highlight of this tour is the Kyoto Aoi Festival, which is considered one of Kyoto’s great festivals, featuring a long procession of people in court attire from Japan’s Heian period. It includes travel to destinations on Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa Island.

The journey begins in Tokyo, exploring the city’s top attractions including Tokyo SkyTree, Tsukiji Outer Market, and Sensoji Temple. We take time for a sushi- making experience, where you can learn to make your own sushi under the guidance of a friendly expert. The tour proceeds to Hakone, where you can catch a glimpse of iconic Mount Fuji while riding the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani. Ride the Shinkansen bullet train, visiting Hikone Castle and the Miho Museum on the way to Kyoto. Enjoy the Aoi Festival, which takes you back in time to the Heian period. The main event is a grand procession between the Kyoto Imperial Palace and two of Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrines. We also see the city’s most famous landmarks, which include the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu Temple, Sagano Bamboo Forest, and Fushimi Inari. Learn about traditional Kyoto culture during an authentic Green Tea Ceremony hosted by a Maiko (Geisha apprentice). We go from there to Nara to mingle with the adorable Sika deer outside Todaiji Temple, which contains the Great Buddha of Japan, then continue to Osaka to stroll through the entertainment district of Dotonbori and browse boutiques at the Shinsaibashi shopping complex. We ride from there to the Kurashiki Canals and behold magnificent Himeji Castle. We drive the Seto Ohashi Bridge over to Shikoku and see the historic buildings of Shikoku Mura and Ritsurin Park in Takamatsu, then enjoy a scenic drive over the Shimanami Kaido back up to Hiroshima to visit the Peace Museum and Park, and gaze through the Floating Gate of Miyajima Island. We ride a bullet train and express train to Kyushu Island to visit the Kitsuki Samurai Districts and admire the natural beauty of the Beppu Hells hot springs. In Takachiho, we immerse in Shinto myth and legend by visiting Amano Iwato Shrine and attending an evening Yokagura performance. This portion of the tour ends in Nagasaki, walking its stately Peace Park and exploring its European-influenced architecture at Dejima, Glover Garden, and Oura Church.

The last week of the tour is spent in Okinawa, enchanting in the spring season, where we experience its unique historic sites and local culture in addition to its natural splendor. We start the tour off visiting the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, which is a moving site from WW2 and the Battle of Okinawa. We attend an Okinawa Cooking Class featuring the native Okinawan longevity foods, and tour an awamori distillery, which makes the local liquor. We walk the international Kokusai Dori Shopping street and browse the foods at Makishi Public Market. The next day we visit the Sefa- Utaki religious site before traveling to Okinawa World to walk through the spectacular Gyokusendo Cave. We then admire the beauty of the Peace Memorial Park, and discover the tragic story of the Himeyuri girls at a local museum. In the evening, we attend a traditional Ryukyu Dance and Okinawan Dinner Show, an immersive introduction to local traditional culture. The following day, we begin with a visit to the ancient Ryukyu sites at Tamaudun Mausoleum and Shuri Castle, before taking a look around the lovely flora found at the Southeast Botanical Gardens. We finish up the day at Mihama American Village, a shopping center with an Americana flair. The final day of sightseeing features a trip to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium - considered one of the best aquariums in Japan. The tour wraps up with a trip to explore the Nakijin Castle Ruins and a drive across scenic Kouri Bridge.
