Our Japan In-Depth with Okinawa (Reverse) Spring Tour features both popular must-travel destinations, now including Okinawa, together with less-touristy destinations for a more immersive look at Japan.

Explore Japan in-depth on a tour through Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa Island exploring each area’s regional history, culture, and beauty. This tour takes place during the spring and, like our other Japan In-Depth itineraries, are designed for people looking to see both the popular sights in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, as well as some of the less-traveled parts of Japan.

The tour starts on Okinawa Island during the enchanting spring season. The itinerary includes both traditional historic sites of the old Ryukyu Kingdom (many of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites), and contemporary landmarks connected to WW2 and the Battle of Okinawa. Stops include Shuri Castle, the Himeyuri Museum, the Peace Memorial Park, and the Sefa-Utaki religious site. We also enjoy local experiences including a visit to an Awamori Distillery, a cooking lesson with Okinawa longevity foods, and shopping at Kokusaidori and Mihama American Village. No tour of Okinawa would be complete without taking time to enjoy the nature and wildlife, and our tour includes a visit to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Gyokusendo Cave, Southeast Botanical Gardens, and Kouri Bridge.

Go from there to Kyushu Island, where we make our way to Nagasaki, visiting its stately Peace Park and historic European-influenced architecture at Dejima, Oura Church, and Glover Garden. We depart from there for Takachiho to see Takachiho Gorge and immerse in Shinto myth at Amano Iwato Shrine and at an evening Yokagura Performance. In Beppu, view the natural hot spring “Hells” of Beppu, which each have distinct features, and spend time in the company of Japanese macaques at Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park. We then ride the Shinkansen bullet train to Hiroshima to see its Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and gaze through the Floating Gate of Itsukushima Shrine. We take the Shimanami Kaido over the Seto Inland Sea to Shikoku to see beautiful Ritsurin Park and admire the historic buildings in Shikoku Mura open-air museum. We return back to Honshu over the Seto Inland Bridge, stopping to see Himeji Castle and the Kurashiki Canals, and enjoy a dinner of Wagyu Beef, on the way to Nara and Kyoto. In Nara, behold the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple, and interact with the wild Sika Deer at Nara Park. See the top historic locations of Kyoto, such as Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kiyomizu Temple, the Sagano Bamboo Grove, and Gion Geisha District. While there, you'll be able to experience the traditional culture of Kyoto while participating in a Green Tea Ceremony hosted by a Maiko (Geisha apprentice). We then take the Shinkansen Bullet Train to Maibara, and then to Kanazawa to stroll through Kenrokuen - one of the greatest gardens of Japan. We explore the nearby village of Shirakawago, then head to Takayama to browse its Morning Market, stroll through Old Town Takayama and see the Takayama Jinya former government office. From there, we make our way to Tokyo, stopping to see Matsumoto’s “Crow Castle”, ride a scenic Ropeway over Hakone and Owakudani, and gaze on iconic Mount Fuji. The tour ends in Tokyo, where we visit top attractions including Shibuya Crossing and Sensoji Temple, and enjoy a Sushi Making experience.

Join an in-depth tour of Japan to many of its must-see historic sights, rare cultural experiences, and beautiful landscape.
